Comment on the Clearwater National Forest Travel Plan!

The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) is open for public comment through October 2, and the Sierra Club is urging it’s members to support a modified alternative D. This alternative best protects wilderness characteristics, traditional non-motorized recreation opportunities, and provides the highest level of elk security of the four alternatives.

 

The DEIS analyzes four alternatives. Alternative C (the agency’s preferred alternative,) adequately protects the Great Burn & Mallard-Larkins Roadless Areas however, other important wild areas such as Bighorn-Weitas will see continued impacts from inappropriate off-road vehicle use. Alt. D is designed with a Wildlife and Recommended Wilderness emphasis and best protects wildlife habitat, and recommended wilderness characteristics. Although D provides the least motorized access, there is still significant motorized use allowed in Roadless Areas.

Take Action:

Urge the Forest Service to adopt a modified version of Alternative D to include a year-round motorized prohibition in all Inventoried Roadless Areas.

Urge the agency to drop the proposed Forest Plan Amendment. The agency proposes to remove Elk Habitat Effectiveness Standards from the Forest Plan which analyzes the important relationship between road & trail densities, elk security, and habitat effectiveness.

Thank the Forest Service for recognizing the outstanding values of the Great Burn and Mallard-Larkins Roadless Areas as well as three proposed additions to the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, proposing a year-round motorized prohibition in Alt. C & D.

Why Travel Planning? This process proposes to manage motorized and mechanized travel within the 1.8 million acre Clearwater National Forest. Essentially, this process will designate the types of vehicles and seasons of uses for motorized travel. All areas not designated open will be closed to motorized travel.
