Thank Mayor Bieter and the City Council

Action needed by 30, 2008

Big Win for Boise River and Idaho Families  The Boise City Council unanimously approved a resolution opposing the development of the Atlanta Gold cyanide heap leach mining operation in the headwaters of the Boise River.  This is a tremendous achievement in the campaign to stop the Atlanta Gold Mine and it is a direct consequence of the petitions and letters delivered to the Mayor and the packed house at the public meeting on November 15, 2006.  Thank you and congratulations, you made a difference.

The Resolution stated that the City has a vested interest in the mining operation because of its potential negative effects on the City, its environment and its citizens and named the Boise River as the “Treasure Valley’s most important and irreplaceable natural asset.” The Resolution concluded that “Atlanta Gold’s current proposed transportation, mining and heap-leach operations in the Boise River watershed…pose an unacceptable long-term risk to the river’s health, and thus to the continued well-being of our environment, our economy, and our citizens.”

The Resolution urges other Southwest Idaho municipal and county governments to go on record in solid opposition and calls upon the U.S. Forest Service and the State of Idaho to “hold Atlanta Gold to the highest operational, financial, environmental and transportation standards allowed by law.”

Idaho Families for Clean Water will work with Mayor Bieter to build opposition to the mine and we will continue to explore ways to permanently protect the headwaters of the Boise River.
